DESCRIPTION.

TheTUBE-TECHcompressorCL1Bdiffersfrommanyothercompressors,inthatthegain-

reductionelementismadefromanon-semiconductorelement,whichinitselfhasaverylow

harmonicdistortionandnoneofthenon-linearityproblemsinvolvedwhenusingmost

semiconductorelements.Furthermorethereisnolong-termdegradationoftheelementthus

givingitalmostinfinitelife.Thiselementisplacedaftertheinput-transformerofthecompressor

andfollowedbyanalltube-basedamplifierwithagainof-



dBto+30dB.

Thusthesignalisnotfedthroughanysemiconductorcircuitryonitswaytotheoutput.

Theamplifierconsistsoftwotubes(valves)inpush-pullconfiguration(oneECC83asthe

pre-ampandphasesplitter,andoneECC82astheoutputstage),andanoutputtransformer.

Thepowersupplyforthepre-ampandphasesplitterarestabilizedandtheheatersofboth

tubes(valves)arefedwithastabilizedDCvoltage.

Thewholeamplifier(includinginputandoutputtransformer)andthepowersuppliesareplaced

ononePC-board.

Bothinputandoutputarebalanced(600



)andfullyfloating.

Thein/outkeyswitchesthecompressorinandoutwithoutclicks.

THESIDECHAIN:

Thesidechainistheonlypartofthecompressorthatcontainssemiconductors.Theyareused

forthreereasons:Firsttheydonotaffectthesoundreproduction,secondtheyhaveahighslew

rate,whichisofimportancefortheperformanceofthecompressorandthirdtheydon'ttakeup

muchroom.

ItcontainstwoJ-FETquadop-amps,onenpn-transistorandoneFET-transistor,whichhandles

thesignalforthegain-reductionelement.

Thecompressorcontainstwotimeconstantscircuits:

1.Fixedattackandreleasetimes

2.Variableattackandreleasetimes

The

attack/releaseselect

switchmakesitpossibletousethesetwocircuitsseparatelyor

combinetheirfunctions.

Thisgivesafeaturenotnormallyobtainedinothercompressors:

Inthecombined(fix./man.)statetheattack-andreleasecontrolsmakesitpossibleto
