How do diodes work, and what are they used for ?

Diodes are an electrical device which are used to isolate current flow by controlling (blocking or passing) its flow.

Diodes introduce a 0.7 volt drop in voltage to the circuit in which they are installed. There is a band, or stripe, on one

end of the diode, which is used to identify its polarity. The direction that it will be oriented will depend on the

polarity of the system involved:

For the most part, the only times you will need to use a diode will be in conjunction with an alarm install or when

building delay circuits. We recommend any IN4000 series diodes, which are typically rated for 1 amp. Some

examples of use with an alarm install are:
